Infectious diseases, also known as communicable diseases, contagious diseases or transmissible diseases, are caused by pathogenic microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, parasites or fungi. The diseases can be spread, directly or indirectly, from one person to another. Zoonotic diseases are infectious diseases of animals that can cause disease when transmitted to humans. An infectious disease (ID) specialist is a doctor of internal medicine who is qualified as an expert in the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases. Not everyone who has an infectious disease needs an infectious disease specialist. Generally, infections are initially diagnosed by primary care physicians or internal medicine doctors. Your primary care physician will determine if you have a need to see an ID specialist.
