Indigenous peoples have been present for thousands of years in aboriginal territories around the world. These populations inhabit landscapes that collectively hold some of the worlds most diverse people, languages, cultures, and biodiversity. Freeport-McMoRan acknowledges that some indigenous peoples have historically occupied areas near our operations or have ancestral connections to these lands, and we are committed to engaging with these groups to establish and maintain long-term relationships built on transparency and trust that earns our social license to operate
Our approach aims to respect the social, economic, and cultural rights of indigenous peoples, including supporting their effective representation and participation in engagements with our company. This approach includes adherence to the ICMM Position Statement on Indigenous Peoples and Mining and working towards obtaining free prior and informed consent for new projects and material expansions of existing projects. Through ongoing engagement, cultural promotion, and preservation projects, as well as training and development programs, Freeport-McMoRan seeks to address needs while being sensitive to the cultures and customs of indigenous people.
