Owners of Hermannhof, Jim and Mary Dierberg, ventured west to California to plant vineyards in the same area where the movie Sideways was later made. This region, about a two-and-a-half hour drive north of Los Angeles, is well known for producing exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Dierberg wines are produced from two different vineyards that benefit from cooling breezes and fog from the Pacific Ocean that help make the sites ideally suited for these varietals. The family also produces Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc from its estate vineyard Star Lane, where the maritime influence is less significant, allowing for warmer temperatures more suited to Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. Backing up to the lower slopes of the San Rafael Mountains, which loom high above the ranch, Star Lane unfolds itself in its own pristine valley. Star Lane vineyard climbs from the canyon floor to the benchlands above and, ultimately to the highest mountain tops sites-each area contributing a unique element to the resulting wines. The Dierberg and Star Lane wines reflect the familys vision and dedication to produce the best expression the terroir has to offer. The wines are produced at the Star Lane Winery facility located at the Star Lane Vineyard in the Happy Canyon area of the Santa Ynez Valley. The winery was designed utilizing as much of a minimal approach to winemaking as possible such as gravity flow rather than pumping wherever possible. The finest selection of barrels from world- renowned cooperages are used at Star Lane to gracefully age the wines to their fullest expression. The Dierberg and Star Lane wines are made for connoisseurs looking for dry wines to compete with the best that California can offer. We invite you to experience these exceptional wines at our Hermann tasting room located in the historic Cooperage building next door to Hermannhof Winery.
