Mission Statement APLA Health restores dignity and trust within underserved communities by providing world-class LGBTQ+ empowering healthcare, support services, and HIV specialty care. Founding In October 1982, the four founders of AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA)—Nancy Cole Sawaya, Matt Redman, Ervin Munro, and Max Drew—attended an emergency meeting at the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Community Services Center. The meeting featured a presentation by a representative from San Francisco’s Kaposi’s Sarcoma Foundation about Gay Related Immunodeficiency Disease (GRID), one of the early names for AIDS. Because fears about the new disease were rampant, these four friends set up a telephone hotline to answer questions from the community. They gathered the limited information available and began hotline training, with twelve volunteers in the initial group. The hotline was operated from a closet in the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Community Services Center, where volunteers answered a single telephone and read information from a one-page fact sheet. Realizing that funds were needed to educate the community and prevent the spread of the disease, the founders enlisted the help of other friends (who became many of APLA’s early volunteers) and held a Christmas benefit. The party raised more than $7,000, which became the seed money for a new organization. Recognizing that AIDS was not just a gay disease, the founders named the organization AIDS Project Los Angeles. The first board of directors was elected on January 14, 1983.

Our Work Ascencia is a nonprofit boutique-style homeless services agency and emergency shelter nestled in a quaint suburban neighborhood of Glendale, CA, serving 1,200 people in need every year. Ascencia provides a range of services and housing to move homeless families and individuals in Glendale, Burbank, West Hollywood, East Hollywood, and the surrounding communities of Los Angeles off the streets and into their own homes. These programs include street outreach, 45 beds of year-round emergency housing for families and single adults, comprehensive case management services, on-site mental health care, including trauma therapy and psychiatry, and a financial literacy program. In 2019, we added a Housing Location Navigator responsible for developing relationships with property owners and landlords and identifying housing units in advance of need. Ascencia augments its client-centered work with community volunteers who provide meals, enrichment activities (virtual bingo is very popular right now), and services such as haircuts and tutoring. The highly popular Guest Chef program ensures that Ascencia shelter residents receive a hot nutritious meal nightly, and gives the volunteers and shelter residents an opportunity for social interaction. Our programs employ a whatever-it-takes approach to move families and individuals from homelessness to stability in permanent housing. We envision a community where people in need can access services and find safe, affordable housing. Our work begins with a fundamental respect for the dignity of the people we serve, driven by the persistent and unfailing belief that no one should be without a home.

Awakening Recovery

Awakening Recovery's purpose is to provide an affordable and safe sober living environment for men 18-32+ that motivates sustained recovery from alcoholism and drug addiction through its comprehensive structure. Awakening Recovery's long-term goal is to create a community of men in recovery that have transformed their thinking, feelings, and behavior to foster the choice of lifelong sobriety, where they have the opportunity to thrive and give back to the world, courageously facing life's challenges with honesty, conviction, integrity, humility, and gratitude. As a non-profit sober living environment, we have the unique ability to offer a sliding scale of rent or scholarships to residents with proven need, alleviating the insurance path and financial hardships through the generous donations of our loyal donors. The approach to our sober-living community encourages residents willing to live in a drug and alcohol-free environment to awaken from their addiction to a new way of thinking and the adoption of new or forgotten behaviors that promote personal integrity, self-respect, accountability, honesty, and self-sufficiency. We don't claim to be responsible for anyone's relapse or recovery, as that is each resident's choice. However, the profound change that is brought about by the completion of the Awakening Recovery process gives residents the opportunity to go out into the world taking responsibility for their lives, with renewed faith and hope for the future, making the daily decision of life-long sobriety their chosen path.
