Benson Hospital

Benson Hospital has been serving the San Pedro Valley community since 1970. The original hospital was privately owned by James Hesser, M.D., and was located where the current public library is today (300 S. Huachuca St.) In 1963 the building was purchased by the Kartchner family and the San Pedro Valley Hospital District was formed. In April of 1966, plans began to build a new hospital at its present location. Benson residents Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Getwiller donated 10 acres of land on the rise for the site of the present hospital. At last in early July 1970, the Benson Hospital was opened to receive patients. Almost immediately, filming of the movie Rage, starring George Scott and Richard Basehart, took place in the Benson area. Much of the movie was shot in the new Benson Hospital. What started as a small community hospital meeting the simple needs of patients of this Southeastern Arizona area has grown to care for an overwhelming number of people in our Emergency Department. With the influx of hundreds of winter visitors and many new permanent residents, outpatient use in laboratory, radiology, and rehabilitation also have increased dramatically.

Better Bucks Sierra Vista

The "Better Bucks" are one-dollar vouchers, in five-dollar booklets with a free bus pass printed on watermarked paper. The program would welcome all to participate. The program is sponsored by the Sierra Vista Police Department and the City of Sierra Vista. The booklets have service providers for the homeless listed inside them and on the "dollars" themselves. They are sold for six dollars to the public, (one dollar goes back into program costs) who will then give them to the poor and homeless. The project is due to start in later September. We plan to have a display at "Art in the Park", earlier if possible. The merchants will sell the booklets to the public. The program will give them at no charge the first allotment of the "Better Bucks. For example, we would give Frys 200 booklets at no cost, signed for by one of the store's general managers. (Kroger Corp. has approved this program.) Once they get down to the last 10-20 booklets we come with another allotment, which then we would take a check for the booklets they sold. Our merchants are the benefactor of the increased sales and it would not be out of pocket to get started. They will also enjoy recognition from the community in their efforts to help the needy. The merchants may also put their names and a scan on the vouchers. (Both of which they would pay for.) You are welcome to go online. Better Bucks in your search engine. Once the website is fully constructed you will see more about the program. The primary service offer helps to the poor, the homeless, and panhandlers. We will make it possible to give them aid without enabling their addictions.
