F I S H/Friends In Service Helping
FISH stands for "Friends in Service Helping Others." Friends are there for a helping hand when you need it. Friends are not there to be taken advantage of by those unwilling to help themselves. Distinguishing between these two groups is something that FISH, as a private charitable organization, can do but the government cannot. FISH allows churches, local government and local businesses to make one monthly contribution and to send those in need to one central location, rather than each church and local organization being solicited one at a time by those who make it a profession of praying on the charitable nature of our good citizens.
FISH is governed by a board of directors drawn from community leaders who have shown special interest in the plight of those in need in their community. Twenty-two staff members and over 120 volunteers work side-by-side to meet the challenges of the mission of FISH every day. Our volunteers come from every walk of life and include professionals, retirees, and students. Together, they are the heroes who serve our community.

AGENCY DESCRIPTION AND POPULATION SERVED:
Founded as the Elko County Womens Center in 1985, the Family Resource Centers of Northeastern Nevada have enjoyed a long history of supporting individuals and families in Elko County. On 2/3/93 the name was officially changed to Elko County Family Resource Center, where the intent was to mirror the culture of rural Nevada. In 1996 the Elko County Family Resource Center adopted a commitment to assist in the development of community-based programs in other communities throughout the region. With this focus, the organization became Family Resource Centers of Northeastern Nevada on 1/28/99.
As a private, non-profit 501(c) (3) organization, FRCNN administers numerous programs. Each year we provide referrals and life-enhancing programming for more than 15,000 residents in the cities of Elko, Wells, Jackpot, Wendover, and Carlin. Our programs emphasize the integration of the knowledge, skills, and abilities all families need to resolve difficulties and achieve success. Rather than focusing on a fragmented, problem-oriented approach, our main priority is to deliver comprehensive, wraparound services specific to the cultural context of the families. Collaboration with individuals, corporations, other community service agencies is a major hallmark of our success.
PROGRAMS AND SERVICES:
Family Advocacy: Individualized family support in developing health, independence, and self-sufficiency. Application assistance for Medicaid, Food Stamps, Housing, Energy Assistance, etc.
Parenting Classes: We offer FREE specialized, evidence-based, privately instructed parenting programs for parents with infants, toddlers, pre-teens, and teens. Programming includes specialized training for divorcing parents, blended families, grandparents as parents, and academic achievement.
Referrals and Information: Each year we receive more than 9,500 calls for assistance from families residing in northeastern Nevada. We connect these families and individuals with community services, businesses, etc.
Grandparent Respite: Childcare reimbursement payments for Northern Nevada residents over the age of 55 raising their grandchild/ren or other relatives under age 18 without any help from the biological parents.
Teen Health Education: Medically accurate, evidence-based programs, for adolescents and teens, aged 10-19, have proven effective in reducing the risk of HIV, STDs, and Teen Pregnancy.
Women, Infants, and Children (WIC): Nutritional education and supplemental food for low-income pregnant/postpartum women, infants, and children under age 5.
Breastfeeding Support & Information: Help and resources for breastfeeding.

Family Respite Care of Nevada, formerly the Northern Nevada R.A.V.E. Family Foundation, has been dedicated to empowering families since its inception in October 1995. Initially established with the support of a grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, our organization focused on combating child abuse and neglect among children with special needs and disabilities. Over the past 28 years, we have continually evolved, expanding our services to include exceptional respite care, while maintaining our core mission of providing critical support to families in need.
In April 2024, we transitioned to a new name that more accurately reflects our mission to enhance the well-being of families by offering respite care to caregivers of children with special needs. This change underscores our commitment to clarity and reinforces our dedication to delivering essential assistance. We are profoundly grateful for the support and relationships we have built over the years, which inspire us to continue our work with optimism and dedication.
