Would it be OK if I told you my story?
When I was a kid I stuttered horribly. My parents tried desperately to help me. They would say, “Carl … Stop! Start again!”
This went on for some time until I eventually stopped speaking altogether. Except for in school where, like all kids, I had to stand up and read either from a book or a book report.
Speaking TERRIFIED ME!
At age 12 I entered speech therapy with a small group of boys my age. We all came from different schools, but we all had one thing in common: WE HATED SPEAKING! Because we all stuttered and stammered.
Two years later, I was ‘cured.’ Truth be told there is no cure for stuttering. Luckily I overcame it. Or shall I say I learned a very valuable lesson? It’s a BIG one. I share this and help my clients with this all the time:
The only person in control of your speaking is you!
Yes, it’s YOU who controls the outcome of your speaking. It’s a lesson I still carry with me today. Now, don’t get me wrong. As a broadcaster, I’ve learned a lot too. I’ve learned how to ‘say it with fewer words’ and ‘tell it like it is.’ The foundation though of everything I’ve accomplished as a broadcaster, and now as a speaker, all goes back to that one nugget I learned way back in speech therapy. It helped me A LOT…and I know, like I know, as I know, it can also help you. If you are committed to growing your business by speaking more about what it is you do, then it will indeed help you.
