About Town of Sumner
Sumner was named for John Cary Sumner, fifth child of Joseph Chestnutt Sumner and Mahala Smith Sumner. he had 11 children with four wives, Rebecca Young, Mary Ann Monk, Polly Hobby, and Pennelyne Joiner.
The charter establishing Sumner was signed on August 9, 1863
