About Marengo County Historical Society

The Marengo County Historical Society has been dedicated to preserving the stories and landmarks that define our community since its founding in 1961. Established as a nonprofit organization in 1967, the Society quickly became a cornerstone for local preservation, acquiring its first property, Bluff Hall, built in 1832. Over the years, its stewardship expanded with the addition of Laird Cottage in 1993 and Lyon Hall in 1997, ensuring that the architectural treasures of Demopolis and Marengo County continue to be protected for generations to come.

Guided by its mission to gather, preserve, study, and share the history of Marengo County, the Society works tirelessly to bring the past to life for residents and visitors alike. Through carefully curated artifacts, educational programs, and heritage tourism, it highlights the cultural richness of Demopolis, Marengo County, and the Black Belt region. With every effort, the Society inspires a deeper appreciation for the area’s heritage and fosters community pride by keeping history vibrant, accessible, and celebrated.
