ATTENTION HIGH SCHOOL CERAMICS TEACHERS!!!

Tuscarora Pottery School offers 3-day Raku Workshops for high school programs and their students. Join Jerry Hendershot in Tuscarora for glaze-making, firing, and finishing workshops designed to teach students about the many types of Raku and Alternative Firing approaches in Ceramics.

Students will have hands-on time to work with clay as an added bonus while sampling over 30 different raku glazes, and prepping for Saggar, Obvara, Horsehair, and Naked Raku. There will be time to learn about. the glaze chemistry of raku and how it impacts the various effects and outcomes of raku firing.

Students will have the choice to camp on the grounds of the school or stay in our 19th-century hotel. There are 6 rooms to choose from (a total of 11 beds, but lots of floor space). Meal supplies will be purchased by pottery school staff and either prepared for high school groups by staff (or other chaperones present if desired instead), paying attention to dietary needs as indicated by sponsoring teacher.

Teachers and additional, non-participating adults are free of charge. Student cost for room/site, meals (2 dinners, 1 lunch, and 2 breakfasts), clay, glaze, firing, and instruction is $220. Teachers are required to be present for the entire duration of the workshop along with their students. Teachers are responsible for their students while in attendance.

Requirements for the workshop:

1). Minimum of 1 parent per 6 students needed as chaperones.

2). Program teacher must be present. Teachers may participate in all activities for free.

3). Signed waiver form in terms of transportation to and from school, participation in the workshop, and use of facility materials and equipment.

4). Bisqued fired pots ready for glazing are brought with students on arrival.

5). Close-toed shoes for firing in the kiln yard.

6). Sleeping bag for camping or hotel (no bedding will be provided)

7). Drinks, snacks, or other dietary needs as specifically desired by participants.
