Primary care medicine is a branch of medical practice focused on providing comprehensive, preventative healthcare for individuals and families. It includes the diagnosis, treatment, and management of common health problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, depression, anxiety, and other chronic conditions. Primary care physicians are trained to provide preventive services such as immunizations, screenings for cancer and other diseases, health education and counseling about lifestyle changes to reduce risk factors for disease. They also provide diagnostic services such as laboratory tests or imaging studies to diagnose illnesses or injuries. Primary care physicians may refer patients to specialists when needed.
