Camp Floyd Cemetery

Welcome to the Camp Floyd Cemetery, a site steeped in history and reverence. Established in 1858, this sacred ground served as the final resting place for individuals whose lives were intertwined with the troops stationed at Camp Floyd. However, as the soldiers returned to join the Civil War three years later, the cemetery was abandoned. In 1913, a solemn monument was dedicated by the War Department, a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those laid to rest here. In 1960, the American Legion, in a display of honor and respect, installed a sturdy metal fence and placed granite markers, further commemorating the souls who found eternal peace in this hallowed land. Utilizing ground-penetrating radar in 2009, the precise locations of the burials were determined, leading to the placement of new headstones in 2011. These solemn markers bear the poignant inscription "Unknown," a poignant tribute to those whose identities remain shrouded in time. As you visit the Camp Floyd Cemetery, take a moment to pay your respects to these unnamed individuals who played their part in the tapestry of history, leaving an indelible mark on our nation's past.
