Life with Braces: Tips for a Successful Orthodontic Journey
Congratulations on getting braces! Now that you have your new appliances, you might be wondering how to properly care for them and ensure a smooth orthodontic experience. At Engel Orthodontics, we are here to guide you every step of the way.
Eating with Braces:
While you'll be enjoying your favorite treats again soon, it's essential to avoid foods that could potentially damage your braces. Steer clear of chewy, crunchy, sticky, and hard foods, as well as those requiring biting into. Instead, savor softer options like dairy products, soft bread, grains, tender meats, seafood, steamed vegetables, and soft fruits.
Addressing Soreness:
After getting braces, you may experience some tenderness or soreness in your mouth and teeth. This is normal and temporary. To alleviate discomfort, dissolve one teaspoon of salt in eight ounces of lukewarm water and gargle it for a couple of minutes. You can also try a pain reliever if needed. Additionally, your lips, cheeks, and tongue may become irritated initially, but we can provide wax to ease the tenderness.
Loose Teeth and Appliances:
As your teeth shift, it's natural for them to feel slightly loose. This is part of the realignment process, and your teeth will stabilize once they settle into their new positions. If wires or bands come loose, contact us promptly for a checkup and necessary repairs. In the meantime, you can use a spoon or pencil eraser to gently push the wire back into place or apply wax or a wet cotton ball for relief.
Taking Care of Your Appliances:
Consistently wearing your rubber bands, headgear, retainer, or other prescribed appliances is vital for successful treatment. Properly caring for your appliances will ensure effective progress and help avoid any delays in your orthodontic journey.
Play Sports Safely:
Good news for athletes! You can still play sports while undergoing orthodontic treatment. We recommend wearing a mouthguard to protect both your teeth and your braces. If a sports-related emergency occurs, check your mouth and appliances for any damage and contact us immediately.
