Solid waste settles at the bottom, while fats form a layer at the top of the first compartment. Clarified liquid effluent resides between these layers and is directed to the second compartment for further settling. As sewage fills the first compartment, clarified liquids move to the second, eventually flowing to the leach field or pit for further treatment.
