Veterans Fishing Day

The Veterans Fishing Day organized by the Almanor Fishing Association (AFA) has become a cherished annual event, exemplifying a heartfelt commitment to honoring and supporting veterans through the joy of fishing. What started in 2017 with a courageous group of boat captains braving adverse weather conditions to take 26 veterans fishing has evolved into a significant community-driven initiative. The event has grown substantially each year, reaching a remarkable milestone in 2023, where 54 boats took 124 veterans out on Lake Almanor.

AFA, in collaboration with various partners, including guides, Field of Dreams, USFS, California Fish & Wildlife, PG&E, Chester Elks Lodge, and local fishermen, has expanded the event's scope. Participants are not only treated to a day of fishing but also receive commemorative T-shirts and hats. A barbecue dinner at the Chester Elks Lodge provides a warm conclusion to the day, fostering camaraderie among veterans and their hosts. The event's impact extends beyond a single day, with additional fishing trips and accommodations provided for veterans, creating lasting memories. The 2023 event was particularly special, as the celebration included honoring the 100th birthday of local WWII veteran John Bottomley, a poignant moment that reflected the community's deep respect and appreciation for these heroes.
