Cracking and seating concrete pavement before overlaying it serves to reduce the likelihood and impact of reflection cracks in the overlay, which result from slab movement. This process involves intentionally cracking the concrete slabs to shorten their effective length, followed by seating the cracked slabs to restore subgrade support. After cracking, the pavement may be opened to traffic to achieve seating, or a proof roller can be utilized for this purpose.
