Termites and their control
In Southeast Texas, the two most common and destructive species of termites are the Eastern subterranean termite (Reticulitermes flavipes) and the Formosan subterranean termite (Coptotermes formosanus). Both live underground in organized colonies and feed on wood, necessitating the construction of mud shelter tubes for travel. There can be up to 70 termite colonies per acre in the region. While in nature they contribute to the decomposition process, they pose a significant threat to buildings, causing an estimated $5 billion in damages annually in the United States alone. Without treatment, termites can severely damage homes and structures.
