At the City of North Plains, we recognize the importance of strategic economic development in shaping the future of our community. With recent increases in development pressure aligning with broader economic recovery trends in Oregon and Washington County, our residents are keen on ensuring that future growth respects and enhances the unique character and livability of North Plains. In response to these pressures, we've undertaken significant initiatives, including the updating of our Comprehensive Plan and the formulation of ordinances to guide development activities.
Through the completion of the North Plains 2035 Vision and Goals, alongside the recent revision of our Comprehensive Plan, we're committed to steering development in a direction that aligns with our community's values and aspirations. Recognizing the crucial role of economic considerations in this process, we've prioritized the update of our economic element, including the submission of a new Economic Opportunities Analysis to the State's Department of Land Conservation and Development. With residential development pressures on the rise, surpassing 900 new dwelling units since 2015, our focus extends beyond mere population growth to ensure a balanced mix of commercial, industrial, and retail services.
To spearhead these efforts, we've established the Economic Development Commission, charged with fostering proactive economic growth, expanding our local tax base, and enhancing employment opportunities within North Plains. By leveraging the insights from the Housing Needs Analysis and the Economic Opportunities Analysis, alongside the guidance provided by the 2035 North Plains Vision, this commission works collaboratively to formulate recommendations for the City Council, ensuring that economic development efforts align with the broader goals and aspirations of our community.
