Under the Rainbow, you will find the help you need for children with special needs, from birth through age 21 and their families. At Rainbows, we pride ourselves on staying at the forefront of the latest and most effective therapies for children with developmental delays. We are the regional leaders in early childhood development, offering on-site educational child care and pre-kindergarten classes. Moreover, we are proud to be recognized nationally while remaining rooted in our local community as grateful recipients and responsible stewards of our contributions and resources. Our commitment knows no bounds, as we willingly serve all families, regardless of their ability to pay for services, ensuring that even those with limited options and resources receive the support they need.
In moments when life's storms threaten to overshadow a child's smiles and laughter, when a parent's dream of a brighter future is dimmed by the confusion of the current crisis, and when existing systems offer only temporary shelter, look to the rainbow — look to Rainbows United. Our journey began in 1972 as a developmental training center for children with severe, multiple disabilities who were ineligible for special education services provided through public schools. As legislation expanded to encompass all children of school age, regardless of their disability, Rainbows shifted its focus to delivering early intervention services to children below school age.
Since the early 1990s, we have continued to serve this population through a contract with Wichita Public Schools. Additionally, Rainbows took on the lead and fiscal agency responsibility for helping infants and toddlers with special needs in Sedgwick County, and later in Butler County, when community networks were established statewide to cater to this population.
Over the years, Rainbows has grown and diversified its services to meet the community's evolving needs. Today, we offer center-based, community-based, and home-based service options for young children with special needs. Our services encompass hearing and vision specialty services, respite care across the lifespan, case management, autism waiver services, supported family living, foster care for children with special needs, outpatient therapies, and therapeutic child care.
In our center-based classrooms, we embrace an inclusive approach by integrating typically developing children with those who have varied abilities and needs. This promotes understanding, empathy, and a rich learning environment where every child can thrive.
